SHRP05/DTS: Girl working in lab

UAB is pleased to offer the only graduate program in Cytology in the state of Alabama and one of only a few such programs in the country.  Graduates of the Cytology program receive a M.S. in Clinical Laboratory Sciences (MSCLS) with a concentration in Cytology. The UAB Cytology Program will begin training its first class in August, 2010.

The graduate program in Cytology prepares students for a rewarding and challenging career that may help save patients' lives by early detection and management of cancer. Cytotechnologists work closely with pathologists to diagnose and manage infectious, pre-malignant and malignant diseases by microscopically evaluating cells from the body. Students in the Cytology graduate program receive advanced education in:

  • Performance and interpretation of ancillary diagnostic tests
  • New technologies used in clinical and research labs
  • Laboratory management

The Cytology graduate program is the only one of its type in the state of Alabama and one of only a few programs in the nation. The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a top 20 institution with a life sciences focus, and its outstanding faculty share a national and international reputation.

Excellent clinical experiences are provided for students by numerous hospitals and private clinical laboratories affiliated with UAB. The education training along with the clinical experience prepares students for a career that greatly benefits the practice of pathology and the patients it serves.
