Assistant Professor, Department of Nutrition Sciences

The Department of Nutrition Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking a physician nutrition specialist to fill a new clinical faculty position. The incumbent will have primary responsibilities of clinical care and educational activities related to nutrition. Additional responsibilities will include research activity and administrative duties.   The position is a full-time, twelve-month position at the Assistant Professor rank – tenure earning status will be commensurate with the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the chosen candidate.   

 

The primary responsibilities will involve a combination of patient care along with providing educational opportunities for a variety of learners including medical and graduate students, residents, fellows, dietitians, and other students. Patient care responsibilities will include rounding on the inpatient nutrition support consultation service at the UAB affiliated hospitals and the Birmingham VA Medical Center. Outpatient responsibilities will include 3-5 half days of outpatient clinics in clinical nutrition support and weight management. Opportunities exist to develop specialized nutrition clinics. The clinical programs of the Department are multidisciplinary in nature, typically involving several team members that contribute to the care of the patient. These members include registered/licensed dietitians, certified exercise trainers and exercise physiologists, health behaviorists, and nurse practitioners. The educational activities will involve working with the medical school curriculum module directors to incorporate nutrition into the first two years of the medical school curriculum. There will also be responsibility to contribute to the education of the clinical nutrition fellows and medical residents and students participating on the consult service.

 

Additional responsibilities will include collaborating on ongoing and new research projects. This may involve providing clinical support to nutrition related research protocols and participating in data collection, analysis, and interpretation, as well as original research with the candidate serving as principal investigator. Administrative tasks could relate to enhancement of the clinical and educational opportunities within the Department.
