The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s (UAB) Department of Physical Therapy invites applications for our first endowed faculty position, The Bergman/Pinkston Endowed Professorship in Physical Therapy. With this endowed professorship, we are seeking a nationally recognized scholar to enhance our current doctoral programs. This will be a full-time, tenure track, 12-month faculty appointment. Salary, academic rank and tenure status are commensurate with qualifications and experience. Teaching can be in area of expertise, but competitive candidates will have a service and scholarly record related to education (e.g., adult education, assessment and evaluation, learning expertise, research methods, technology, etc.).
The UAB Department of Physical Therapy has offered outstanding educational programs in physical therapy for almost 40 years, lead in part by two exceptional women in our profession, Drs. Joan Bergman and Dorothy (Dot) Pinkston, for whom this professorship is named. Currently, the department supports an entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy and post-professional Doctor of Science degree for physical therapists. The department’s 13 faculty consists of highly qualified individuals known for collaboration, productivity and leadership in physical therapy education, research and service in local, state and national activities. The department is housed in a new state of the art facility with research laboratories addressing clinically relevant studies of human motion and exercise physiology.
The UAB campus encompasses 82 city blocks and has a student enrollment of more than 17,000. UAB is also home to a large graduate school, a world renowned health care complex and more than 70 research centers. Those centers that are of particular interest to rehabilitation researchers focus on such topics as Aging, Neuroscience, Community Health, Outcomes and Effectiveness Research, and Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Disease. Currently, UAB ranks among the top 20 universities in NIH funding, earning more than $470 million per year in contract and grant support, and the School of Health Professions is consistently one of the top two health professions schools receiving NIH funding.

Faculty Position - Bergman/Pinkston Professorship
The University of Alabama at Birmingham is a RU/VH: Research University. The research mission of UAB strongly promotes and supports collaborative efforts among the academic and clinical communities.
Title and Salary: Full-time, 12-month faculty position. Rank, salary, and tenure status commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Qualifications: Academic doctorate degree required with a history of scholarly work in educational methodology. Academic experience in physical therapy education required.
Responsibilities: Conducting education and rehabilitation related research, mentoring of faculty and students in teaching methodology. Teaching content areas beyond scholarly activity is negotiable.
