The Division of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics is a joint division in the departments of Nutrition Sciences and Medicine. The division’s mission is to promote health through the prevention and treatment of nutrition-related diseases. Specifically, the division supports:
- innovative models of clinical care;
- training of students, interns, residents, and fellows;
- conducting research that contributes to the advancement of science and the quality of life; and
- translating scientific knowledge to enable individuals to make sound decisions regarding nutrition and food.
Faculty members are physicians trained in internal medicine, whose sole subspecialty is clinical nutrition, and registered/licensed dietitians. Faculty research areas of interest include obesity, thermogenesis, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, and the nutritional support of patients.
On average, approximately 2,500 patients are seen each year in any of a number of clinical venues. The nutrition clinic is an integral part of the UAB Kirklin Clinic, where Division of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics physicians and dietitians see patients who are referred from other physicians or self-referred.
Among the patients seen for a variety of nutrition-related problems are those in the EatRight Weight Control Program, the Home Parenteral Nutrition Program and Nutrition Clinic, the Supportive Care Clinic, and individual consulting for general nutrition and adults with eating disorders.
