Shannon Houser, Ph.D., MPH, RHIA, is an associate professor in the Health Information Management (HIM) Program in the Department of Health Services Administration, School of Health Professions of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She received her doctoral degree in Health Education and Health Promotion, and a Master’s degree in epidemiology, both from the School of Public Health of UAB. She is a member of the American Public Health Association. Also she has been an active member of the American Health Information Management Association since earning her RHIA credential in 1993. Currently, she teaches in the areas of epidemiology and applied statistics in health care organizations, clinical research methods, data management and information resource management. Her research interests include chronic disease prevention, health behaviors, and the impact of data collection and management on research outcomes. She is also interested in establishing and clarifying the role of HIM professionals in biomedical research. Her current research activities include an epidemiological study on Reasons for the Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS), and a behavioral intervention study on Sexually Transmitted Disease Awareness Program (SOLUTIONS).
