Dr. Huechtker, PhD, PA, Associate Professor, is a former military hospital corpsman who completed Physician’s Associate training at Duke University Medical Center in 1975. He retired from the military in 1987. While on active duty he served as a preceptor for PA students. He earned an Associate’s Degree in Science from the State University of New York in 1977, a Baccalaureate in Economics from Marymount College in 1979, a Master’s in Public Administration from C.W. Post Center-Long Island University in 1981 and a Doctorate in Health Administration from Kennedy-Western University in 2004. After retirement from the military he taught courses in medical laboratory and ECG at Tampa College. He served as Dean at Tampa College from 1983 to 1989. He was the Associate Director of the PA Program at Medical College of Georgia from 1990-1996. He started the PA Program at East Carolina University in 1996 and served as Program Director and Department Chair until coming to UAB in 2002 to serve as Department Chair. He stepped down as Chair in May of 2010 and returned to the faculty in anticipation of retirement from UAB in December of 2012. While at ECU he implemented a successful Distance Learning Program for PAs. During his career he helped start 3 Fast Track Programs in Emergency Departments. He practiced in Family Medicine, Fast Tracks and Student Health until moving to Alabama in 2002.
