S. ROBERT HERNANDEZ, Dr.P.H.
S. Robert Hernandez is Professor in the Department of Health Services Administration in the School of Health Professions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and served as Department Chair from 1994 to 2000. He is a graduate of the Masters of Science in Hospital Administration Program at UAB, and received his doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Hernandez has worked in the health services administration field for more than thirty years and has been a faculty member of the Department of Health Services Administration since completing his doctorate.
He has served as Chair of the Health Care Administration Division of the Academy of Management. He served on the Regent's Advisory Council for the American College of Healthcare Executives in Alabama. He also has served on the editorial boards of Health Care Management Review, Journal of Healthcare Management, Medical Care Review, Health Services Management Research, and Alabama Journal of Medical Sciences. He currently serves as co-editor of the Journal of Health Administration Education.
Dr. Hernandez has published in numerous academic and professional journals and has made many presentations to academic and practitioner groups. His research has focused on strategic issues in the health services industry. He also has studied organizational innovation and change, hospital closure, organizational performance, succession planning, human resource management, information system implementation, and physician behavior in health care organizations. He has been consultant to many health services organization on these and other issues. He has worked extensively in international health in Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Ukraine.
The American Sociological Association and the Academy of Management have honored his applied research. He was appointed to the Accrediting Commission for Education in Health Services Administration in 1998 and is currently Past-Chair of the Board of Directors of the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education. He also served as a member of the Blue Ribbon Task Force on Accreditation. He was selected as the Outstanding Alumnus by the Alumni Association of the Graduate Programs in Health Administration at UAB in 1993, and received the Joseph F. Volker Outstanding Faculty Award for the School of Health-Related Professions at UAB in 1987. The Healthcare Management Division of the Academy of Management awarded the first Excellence in Teaching Award to Dr. Hernandez in 2005. He was awarded the Filerman Prize for Innovation in Health Services Management Education in 2006 by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration.
