Larry R. Hearld, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Services Administration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He received his doctorate in Health Services Organization and Policy from the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. He also holds an MBA (Human Resource Management) and MSA (Health Services Administration) from Central Michigan University and a B.S. (Psychology) from the University of Michigan.
Dr. Hearld also has nearly 15 years of health care industry experience, ranging from direct patient care to benefit design consulting. The majority of his professional experience has focused on helping physicians and physician organizations manage their relationships with health insurance companies and hospitals. In his most recent role, he was responsible for developing and managing a consortium of physician organizations engaged in a pay-for-performance program.
His current research interests include market and organizational factors associated with ambulatory care sensitive hospitalizations, the structure and functioning of physician organizations, inter-organizational relationships in health care markets, professionals and professional relationships within health care organizations, and coalition/alliance-based models of organizing and delivering health services. Past research also has examined quality improvement in health care organizations and community benefits provided by hospitals. Teaching interests include organizational theory, organizational behavior, and organizational research methods.
