Program Timeline
Year 1
  • 24 credit hours of coursework completed in 3 semesters
  • Courses are offered in 3 core areas: healthcare systems, strategic management, and research methods
  • All students receive laptops equipped with required hardware and software
  • One week-long visit per semester to UAB for intensive course instruction
  • Return to workplace and continue courses via distance learning and through applying the concepts, principles, and analytical skills learned
  • Communication with faculty and fellow students is enhanced via BlackBoard Vista on-line course management software
Year 2
  • 24 additional credit hours of coursework, completed in 3 semesters
  • Courses are offered in 3 core areas: healthcare systems, strategic management, and research methods
  • One week-long visit per semester to UAB’s campus for intensive coursework
  • Continue applying course concepts, principles, and analytical skills through action learning assignments within the workplace
  • Maintain communication with faculty and fellow students via BlackBoard Vista on-line course management software
  • Year 2 concludes with a comprehensive examination
Year 3
  • A total of 15 hours dissertation and non-dissertation research credits
  • Complete an applied dissertation, in which research may be conducted in the student’s workplace
  • Return to campus on three occasions for periods lasting up to one week each
  • Meet with Dissertation Committee during campus visits for progress review
  • Defend dissertation proposal during the first term
  • Complete the data analysis during the second term
  • Complete discussion sections and defend the dissertation during the third term
