
The UAB Biotechnology Program is in the School of Health Professions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and has all the necessary ingredients for success:
§ An excellent research institution with a life science focus, a number 2 ranking in NIH funding for the School of Health Professions, a number 21 ranking in NIH funding for the School of Medicine, and a scientific community with an excellent global reputation for innovation;
§ A program faculty that is dedicated to teaching the students how to apply scientific knowledge to solving problems in order to translate scientific discovery into cutting edge solutions to existing problems;
§ University-wide Interdisciplinary Research Centers that facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations among faculty members;
§ Access to first class Scientific Core Facilities which house state-of-the art equipments for Confocal and Two-photon Microscopy, Mass Spectrometry, Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting (FACS), Molecular Biology Core, Whole Animal Imaging, Gene Knock-out Disease Models, Fermentation, and many others;
§ An institution that provides a system for smooth technology-transfer that allows scientists to move their discoveries from the lab to commercialization in a timely manner;
§ A 140,000 square foot Innovation Depot that serves as an incubator for start-up biotech companies that provide opportunities for student internships;
§ Access to more than 80 biotech companies that are in the state of Alabama that offer great opportunities for internships; and
§ Direct access to the Biotechnology Association of Alabama that brings together the Biotech/Pharma industry, research scientists, clinicians and the business community in order to promote the growth of the Biotech/Pharma Industry in Alabama.
